Food in San Francisco

The food we ate in San Francisco was so mouth watering we thought it deserved its own post. All things considered, we where very lucky for finding these places as our means of searching was just walking up and down Lombard Street.

The Sandwich Spotphoto 1

For lunch we stubbled upon a place called “The Sandwich Spot”. After walking around trying to find a place to eat, we poked our heads inside this sandwich place and we were sold. A huge chalk board on the side wall had over 40 unique sandwiches. After about 10 minutes of looking over the board the cook took us aside and assured us we could not go wrong with any sandwich – choose now or you could be looking at the board for hours.

So we both pulled the trigger and the sandwiches were hands down in our top three best sandwiches of all time. For someone like Jason who lives off sandwiches that says a lot.

Jason got:

  • The Jack Lucky (Marinated Chicken, Bacon, Avocado, Cheddar Jack Cheese, and Bomb Sauce)

Jeremy got:

  • The Mother Clucker (Marinated Chicken, Ham, Swiss, Spicy Dijan, Honey Mustard, Renchies Crispy Fried Onions on Dutch Crunch)

Chubby Noodle

For dinner we decided to try something different. The name itself drew us in: “Chubby Noodle”. The menu was not what we expected. It was small but offered one special dish of all different kinds of food. We ended up getting:

  • Spicy Garlic Noodles
  • Kung Pow Wings
  • Korean Pork Tacos
  • BBQ Pork Fried Rice

photo 2The flavor was so intense and the dishes hit all the right notes. The Spicy Garlic Noodles started off sweet but ended with a heehaw kick. The Tacos had a tangy marinade that sealed in all the flavors. Not one thing was okay.. they were all unbelievable! We found out at the end that they change the menu every day and today was their 62nd Day open.

A Day Amongst the Giants

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAEager to explore the great forest of the Redwoods, we woke up early and got a great head start on the day. Unfortunately 15 minutes into the drive we had to turn around- the memory card for the camera with alll our photos was missing… Jason had misplaced it. But he totally redeemed himself! After a few seconds of searching and pulling the bed apart Jason walked out of that hotel room with the memory card high in hand!

So a slow start to the day but we were finally on our way. You can’t really appreciate the size of the Redwoods until you see them up close. They are MASSIVE. We journeyed through the forest of Redwoods for about 2 hours and it really felt like every tree was bigger than the next. The tree in the picture above measures 21.6 ft in diameter and 304 ft tall.

As we were making our way to our car after our hike through the forest we got a very close up look with some Elks. Words cannot express how amazing a day we were having. Once the Elks trotted away, we made our way over to the Fern Canyons.

The canyons were enormous… 100 feet deep at times!! Everything felt so surreal, like walking around in prehistoric time when everything was giant. But about 30 min into our hike a flash flood warning forced us to sprint back.

Just kidding! It was a perfect day- it’s California

Watch the attached video to see our truck through the dense forest in just a minute. We had to drive through the dense forest on a narrow dirt road, coming within feet of 40 foot drops.

The Drive from Portland to Redwood National Park

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERALeaving from Portland at 9 in the morning, we did not arrive to our hotel in Eureka (near Redwood National Park) until about 8 at night. The 11 hour drive was one of the easiest drives we have ever done. Every single moment of that drive was scenic. The drive was unbelievable. The pictures above may seem amazing, but they do not do justice.

To get to our hotel we drove straight through the Redwoods – it was late and we decided to wake up early and hike through them the next morning. The drive through the enormous trees however was still mind blowing. With some about 4 times taller than trees back home and at least 10 times wider in diameter, we could not believe what we were seeing.

While in the heart of the Redwoods and towards the end of our drive to Eureka, we ran into a heard of Elks. There must have been close to 40 Elk.. If you listen closely in the video attached you can hear an Elk calling out in a loud scream.
Once we arrive at our hotel in Eureka we headed out to dinner at restaurant called “The Lost Coast”. They brewed their own beer and sold them by the pitcher. An 11 hour drive… we deserved this! Only a 5 minute walk back to the hotel and we passed out.

Night in Portland

photo

Our night in Portland was certainly unexpected to say the least. We found a great sports bar called “Spirit of 77”- skeeball, basketball hoops, darts, the biggest screen TV you could imagine… they had it all!! The beer was made locally and the food was great. The manager happened to grow up in Southie, what a small world.

After dinner we headed across Burnside Bridge to check out Old Town Portland. This my friends, was the hot spot. Bars after clubs after food trucks after donuts- the streets were flowing with people! The clubs where so crowded they even had to close down the streets. After checking out downtown we headed back to our hotel to get a good night sleep before the long drive to Redwood National Park.

The Flight to Portland

Torah_Study_Class

The flight to Portland, Oregon was as smooth as could be. The security line at the airport was small and moved quickly. We even ran into a women with a dog that had a remarkable gift. This women had a condition that caused her strokes and her dog would detect her strokes and alert her before they occurred.

The plane took off on time, but due to weather we took a small detour and arrived a little late. The whole flight lasted about 7 hours. A few beers before the flight at Harpoon and we fell asleep within minutes. The flight was pretty uneventful, however at times there was a funky smell on the plane… all we know is that it didn’t come from us. After a movie and another nap we finally arrived at Portland International Airport. A quick stop at Hertz and off we go.

Let the Road Trip Begin
